Not all water is created equal and hydrogen water is the gold standard of water. Early in 2023 I was introduced to hydrogen water and the benefits of drinking it. I took some time to research all types of drinking water to educate myself and what I learned was eye opening.

What is Hydrogen Water?
Hydrogen water has many different names. I will specifically be discussing Kangen Water which is scientifically know as Electrolyzed Reduced Water (ERW). You can do a deep dive into the scientific research by searching ERW on the PubMed website. The reason that so many scientists are researching the effectiveness on this water is due to the presence of molecular hydrogen which is the most potent antioxidant compound known today.
Molecular hydrogen acts as an efficient antioxidant that diffuses rapidly across cell membranes and can reduce free radicals, reducing oxidative stress. Drinking 1.5 liters of hydrogen water per day is equal to the antioxidant value provided by hundreds of fruits and vegetables.

What Makes Hydrogen Water Different?
In addition to being a powerful antioxidant, the H2 (hydrogen) is the smallest molecule in the Universe allowing it to cross the blood/brain barrier and actively reach every cell in the body to help heal and repair. This results in faster circulation of water through the body which helps detoxify the colon by removing acid waste and toxins efficiently.
Hydrogen has a therapeutic potential for over 170 disease models including, Parkinson’s, cancer, Alzheimer’s, and Chron’s disease. Molecular hydrogen is an antioxidant, an anti-inflammatory, anti-aging, anti-diabetic, and anti-tumor.
This is why we drink this water every day and share it passionately with others!
Bottled Water
This is where my research got me. I’ve been thinking that drinking bottled water was the way to go. After all, if I’m paying for it that must mean that it’s better than the free water out of the tap. I WAS WRONG.
Bottled water has tested positive for toxic chemicals. When plastic gets hot it can release a Bisphenol A (BPA) substance that contaminates contents of the container. That is also why you shouldn’t heat your food in plastic containers (or use microwaves, but that is for another post).
Have you seen cases of water sitting outside of convenient stores, grocery stores, and gas stations? As the sun heats that plastic, BPA is being released into the water. And just because you haven’t seen the bottles sitting out doesn’t mean they’ve been protected.
Because of the harmful effects of BPA, many water bottles are now made with PET. UV radiation from sunlight breaks the chemical bonds in plastics, causing the polyethylene terephthalate (PET) to leach into the water. Check the bottom of your water bottles to see what they are made out of.
Acidic
Bottled water can also be slightly acidic and not suitable for a healthy body. You may even be tempted to drink the more expensive Alkaline Bottled Water. But beware, they contain additives such as magnesium sulfate and potassium chloride. These are both used for bowel prep before a colonoscopy.
Effects of Toxic Chemicals in Water Bottles
Endocrine-Disrupting Chemicals that may cause:
- Cancer
- Diabetes
- Reproductive Disorders
- Neurological Impairments of Developing Fetuses and Children
- Hormone Issues in Adults
Berkey or Other Filtered Water
I highly recommend filtering your tap water to remove contaminants, sediments, and bacteria. The most trusted filters will be certified by the National Sanitation Foundation (NSF). You should also have your water tested so you know which filter is needed. A good starting place is to put your zip code into the EWG Tap Water Database. Below is the report from our local water facility.
Berkey, Brita and other counter top filtration devices are an okay method for filtering water but they come with limitations. First, none are NSF certified, and second, they take time to filter your water. A whole home or under sink pre-filtration system is the recommended method of ensuring high quality water is being consumed by you and your entire family.
Tap Water
According to the Environmental Working Group (EWG), there have been 315 pollutants found in America’s tap water since 2004. Over half of these pollutants are completely unregulated and can legally exist in any amount. A new study found that contaminated tap water causes 100,000 cancer cases in the US over a lifetime. Some of the contaminates found in tap water include disinfectants like chlorine and microplastics.
Chlorine
Water treatment facilities depend on chlorine to kill harmful bacteria in the water supply. That sounds like a good thing, right? However, serious issues can occur when these disinfectants create dangerous by products like trihalomethane. Trihalomethane has been linked to bladder cancer, colon and rectal cancer, as well as birth defects.
Microplastics
Only 20% of the 300 million tons of plastic is recycled each year. Most of the plastic ends up littering our land, oceans, air and most importantly our waterways. This plastic shows up in our drinking water in the form of micro-plastic particles.
